Sensor Technological Devices

These are all devices which sense something, and include communication devices. Many of them can be used with Computer Devices. They are split into two general types, active sensors which emit something and then measure the effect, and passive sensors which just measure something already there, this is noted in the description. A number of sensors give things like +15% Understand Machine, these bonuses are not usually cumulative with each other and may overlap with the bonuses gained from a well-known Workshop; the total UM bonus from Sensors and the best Workshop combined will not normally exceed +25%.

It is assumed that ultravision or ultra-violet (UV) vision can see things that are invisible, and infravision or infra-red (IR) vision cannot. If this is not the case then a number of Sensor (and possibly Defence) Devices will have to be looked at quite closely, and possibly new devices added.

Varieties of Sensor Devices

Many more Sensor Devices could be added, and specalised versions may be developed. As a rule the operation, or even the recent operation, of almost any Tech Device which is not purely mechanical or alchemical in nature (typically uses no power) can be detected by a suitable Sensor Device of -1L. Measures may be taken to hide use of a device from a sensor of -1L, or even feed incorrect information to it, and make a sensor of equal L unreliable or short range (techniques include modulation, special shielding, low power operation). A sensor of +1L can detect (recent) use of a device no matter what methods (of lower L) are used to hide its operation. In general devices can be detected within their area of operation, for example an active sensor sweep might be detected, and after effects for a few rounds after they cease being used, or for at most a few turns.

Explanation of Sensor Devices

Infravision Lens: two lenses are made and are usually fitted into goggles. The lenses are filled with Infravision Fluid (one measure fills both lenses) which gives 6" range infravision for 8hrs. As a 2nd level device can be built to use power rather than fluid, 2ep/hr. One measure of fluid is made with the lenses, two may be made in 5 days at a cost of 200gp, or as a 1st level Alchemical potion (2 measures). Passive Sensor. Uses: fluid- 8hrs, power- 2ep/hr. Weight: 7.5gp.
Level: 1st.

Invisibility Lens: as Infravision but gives ultravision and allows the seeing of invisible objects or creatures knowing they are invisible for 1hr, range as normal sight. As a 2nd level device uses 3ep/game turn. Three measures of Invisibility Fluid are made with the lenses, replacement fluid may be made as Infravision Fluid. Passive Sensor. Uses: fluid- 1hr, power- 3ep/g.turn. Weight: 7.5gp.
Level: 1st.

Detector Cube: contains a resonator matrix which causes the cube to glow if brought within 1" of its attuned object; improved range with higher L: 2nd=3", 3rd=6". Psionic Theory I is required to understand how this works. The matrix is attuned to one object or substance during construction (this must be available to attune to), e.g. gold, silver, other metal/element, teleport gates, force fields, balrogs etc. The cube is a minimum of one inch square and is usually black; it is wrecked by damp conditions. Passive Sensor. Uses: indefinite. Weight: 2gp.
Level: 1st.

Electroscope: on holding this near a highly charged object, the metal leaves inside its transparent case stand out visibly. May be used to detect (ionising) radiation by charging it with a static source (such as an ebony rod and silk cloth) and observing how fast the leaves collapse. Passive Sensor. Uses: none. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 1st.

Scintilliscope: a cylindrical device one inch in diameter, hollow and open at one end, the coated transparent lens at the other end makes radiation visible as (faint) flashes of light. Passive Sensor. Uses: none. Weight: 1gp.
Level: 1st.

Energy Field Meter: indicates the strength of fields it is within up to 100ep (+50ep/extra L), how much power is passing through the field and its maximum potential. Indicates if there is more than one and may be set to measure each individually. As a 2nd level device uses power to indicate the direction of the source of the field and any devices drawing power from it as well as how much they are drawing (one at a time). Additionally the overall strength of other fields may be measured if power is used (e.g. magnetic, radiation, defensive and detection). Passive Sensor. Uses: none, indicate- 1ep/g.turn. Weight: 20gp.
Level: 1st.

Power Crystal Meter: indicates the number of energy points in a unshielded Power (or Transformer, etc) Crystal on being held within 3 inches of it. Passive Sensor. Uses: none. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 1st.

Clock: see "Mechanical Devices".
Level: 1st.

Crystal Clock: gives very accurate time based on a vibrating crystal on an analogue display. In addition produces a number of very low power analogue signals, each of which has the frequence of a time unit (e.g. seconds, minutes, years, 13x years, 169x years, 2197x years). Includes a Power Cell/Feed on which it can run for two years, if external power is unavailable. Passive Sensor. Uses: almost none. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 2nd.

Sensors/Transducers: sense/detect and/or create minor physical effects such as sound sensor (microphone), transducer (speaker), ultrasonic transducers, (infra/ultra/invisible) light sensor, transducer (micro-light), heat sensor. May sense magical effects/materials if include magical materials, e.g. mithral. Each sensor/transducer handles one effect. May be connected to such devices as Recorder, Associative Matrix/Alarm, Coder, Micro Computer. May construct 5 similar or 3 dissimilar devices at once. At higher L gain extra range, or alternatively higher quality. If connected devices are remote some form of local signal booster will be required, such as an Interface. Some devices include sensors or transducers as a standard part of them, and some crude forms of these are included in Tools & Materials. Passive or Active Sensor. Range: 1-3"(+1-3"/extra L). Uses: none. Weight: 1-5gp.
Level: 2nd.

Sound Sensor: see Sensors/Transducers. Probably the most common sensor, and often included as part of other devices such as Recorder and various communicators; acts as a sensitive microphone with overload protection, and may be arranged to be directional.
Level: 2nd.

Sound Transducer: see Sensors/Transducers. Probably the most common transducer and also can be used as a less sensitive Sound Sensor; sometimes called a 'speaker' and can reproduce speech and music quite accurately. A pair of these can be used as headphones.
Level: 2nd.

Comms Power Link: see Information Transmission and see "Power Handling Devices".
Level: 2nd.

Comms Power Receiver: see Information Transmission and see "Power Handling Devices".
Level: 2nd.

Information Transmission: see "Power Handling Devices". All the devices to which this applies can be redesigned so that their principle purpose is communication, rather than power handling, typically prefixing their name with Comms, e.g. Comms Power Receiver, etc. If this is done then their power handling capability is a tenth, whether information is conveyed or not, and the quality of information is raised to be as a Visual Transceiver. A (Holo)Coder on both ends raises this to Holo Transceiver quality. Both ends must be redesigned versions of devices or information is conveyed as the standard power handling devices, and power handling is only a tenth. This redesign does not effect the speed (light speed or instantaneous) at which information is transfered.
Level: -.

Sonic Vision: uses one or more arrays of three (ultra-)Sonic Transducers (see Sensors/Transducers) and is the most basic robot sensory system, giving an echo location ability similar to a bat. This can't clearly 'see' objects smaller than approx. 6 inches so fine work can not be done using it. One array will give 'vision' in a 120deg arc, two arrays 240deg, and three a full 360deg. No other supporting devices or programs are required, though the Gen (robot intelligence) program is slightly non-standard. Active Sensor. Uses: none. Weight: 3/6/9gp.
Level: 2nd.

Level: 2nd.

240deg Sonic Vision: see Sonic Vision.
Level: 2nd.

360deg Sonic Vision: see Sonic Vision.
Level: 2nd.

Thermal Vision: uses one or more arrays of three infra-red Light Sensors (see Sensors/Transducers) and gives patterns of thermal information. Usually used in combination with Sonic Vision and an Infra Red (IR) Recognition program to give double the chance of recognising something from the heat radiation pattern data. Passive Sensor. Uses: none. Weight: 3gp.
Level: 2nd.

Pulser: transmits signals through the ethereal plane in the form of simple patterns of pulses. A alternative version which can only receive patterns of pulses, called a Pulse Receiver, may be constructed. These pulses may be transmitted or received by a Transceiver, and this device is effectively a crude form of one that can either receive or tranmsmit. There is a standard code of pulses which can be used for messages in Unglas, the secret language of technology. In some cases these pulses may communicate at far greater range than speech as they are less sensitive to interference, range is otherwise as a Transceiver. One variety of Sensor that can be constructed is a Pulse Trigger, which has a pre-selected pattern of pulses it responds to (Range: 50" or 5mls. Weight: 1gp). Active Sensor. Uses: below ground- 1ep/50"/turn, above ground- 1ep/5mls/turn. Weight: 25gp.
Level: 2nd.

Pulse Receiver: see Pulser.
Level: 2nd.

Pulse Trigger: see Pulser.
Level: 2nd.

Identity Circuit: recognises the identity of one person it is attuned to in construction by sensing the life aura. Psionic Theory I is required to understand how this works. May be used to (de)activate devices for that person, usually those which use energy. Two may be constructed, keyed to the same person, at +50% cost, three at +100% cost. Requires a successful Modify Machine throw to remove it, and in some cases DMs may rule does not increase the weight of devices it is included in. (Micro) Miniturisation should make these more difficult to remove without wrecking the device, say -20% (micro -40%), and there might even be an anti-tamper self-destruct keyed to that person, giving say a further -10%. Requires 1gpwt of mithral. Passive Sensor. Range: 1'. Uses: none. Weight: 1gp.
Level: 3rd.

Multi Spectrum Lens: two lenses are made which act as Infravision Lens, Invisibility Lens, a tele/microscopic device of great power or as a (low-level light) image intensifier. All functions bar tele/microscopic may be combined as desired. If worn and even if not performing one or more functions gives a third chance of noting an illusion. Power usage is for a pair of lenses. Passive Sensor. Uses: infra- 0.5ep/turn, invis- 5ep/turn, tele/micro- 1ep/turn, image- 1ep/turn. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 3rd.

Energy Probe: traces energy in electronic or crystal circuitary by indicating where, what type and how much energy is flowing in it. Can generate and trace various test pulses. Gives +15% Understand Machine where appropriate, mainly when studying the internals of devices. Passive or Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 20gp.
Level: 3rd.

Field Probe: measures almost any sort of Field indicating power, type and area. Can generate various minor Fields to act as probes and interfere with, and possibly control, circuits with a range of 5'. Will sense but not measure technological energy flows of almost any sort with a range of 10'. Gives +15% Understand Machine where appropriate, mainly on devices making heavy use of (Force) Fields. Passive or Active Sensor. Uses: measuring- 2ep/turn, probing- 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 3rd.

Transceiver: communicates through the ethereal plane with another Transceiver at light-speed. Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to understand how this works. In the basic form handles sound only (sometimes called Audio Transceiver; incorporates basic sound transducers), at +1 L continuous visual images as well (Visual Transceiver), and at +2L continuous holographic images as well (Holo Transceiver). Note that some external device is needed to supply/display the (holo) images. May include a recording crystal, as a Recorder, for an extra 500gp (Recording Transceiver), and an automatic message transmission/recording system for a further 500gp and 7days work (Automatic Transceiver). Nearby storms on the physical or ethereal plane, particularly those with lightning, will cause interference; there is generally some interference whatever. Range varies, but up to 10mls (500" below ground) is almost always possible, beyond 100mls (5000") is almost always impossible, and beyond 1000mls (50,000") is incredibly rare (except in ideal conditions or through vacuum); sound may be possible in conditions where vision is not. Active Sensor. Uses: below ground- 1ep/50"/turn (x2 for visual/holo), above ground- 1ep/5mls/turn (x5 for visual/holo). Weight: 50gp, visual/holo- 100gp.

Video Camera: continuously converts (2D) visual images (including colour ) into electrical signals. These can be recorded, transmitted, decoded or displayed. Sometimes called a Colour Video Camera. Other versions at equal or higher L can handle infrared, ultraviolet (invisible), low-level light, or some combination of these. Passive Sensor. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 3rd.

Colour Video Camera: see Video Camera.
Level: 3rd.

Infrared (IR) Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts infrared into electrical signals, but not normal light. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 3rd.

Ultraviolet (UV) Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts ultraviolet (invisible) into electrical signals, but not normal light. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 3rd.

Gesture Scanner: 'reads' the gestures of a creature and codes this as information, usually for feeding to a ~ Computer. A gesture can be any body movement, or combination of movements and most are particular to an individual, complex hand movements, nods, shrugs, winks and even twitches are possible. In most cases there is a standard set of gestures which have to be calibrated to some extent for an individual, and to which they can add those unique to them. Rough calibration takes at least a game turn and requires some form of feedback device, such as a Video Monitor, full calibration at least at hour. A Body Scan of a creature and Gesture Analysis program reduces calibration time to a tenth. Incorporates a gesture decoder, which can be sent previously stored Gesture Templates, which stores templates for one creature (+2/extra L), and a sound sensor. This is typically how Techs input text. Scanning is done using a technique similar to a Body Scanner and an active Body Shield, and some other forms of defence, will stop scanning. See "Programming Devices" and see "Information Devices" for further details. Passive Sensor. Range: 1" (x2/extra L). Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 100gp.
Level: 3rd.

Comms Micro Resonator: see Information Transmission, and see Power Resonator in "Power Handling Devices".
Level: 3rd.

Scent Sensor: a sensor that detects scents and smells with about the accuracy of a human nose. At +1L a Fine Scent Sensor which will accurately detect scents and smells to the finest detail may be constructed. As a great deal of the sense of taste is smell, this also can detect tastes. The information produced by this is quite complex and extracting the full meaning from it needs processing, either by a (Scent)Coder or some suitable program. Passive Sensor. Range: none. Uses: none. Weight: 2gp.
Level: 3rd.

Magic Sensor: a sensor which gives the direction, rough position (exact if within 5'), and rough power of active magical forces (i.e. it will only detect magic users if they are using magic, or magical items that are functioning; it will detect things like wards, and other things which have a continuous detection effect). It gives no analysis of these forces. Requires 1gpwt of mithral. Active Sensor. Range: 6". Uses: none. Weight: 5gp.
Level: 3rd.

Inertial Sensor: consists of a Stabaliser, and three Associative Matrix to decode the Stabaliser output. This is listed here because it is a sufficiently common set devices used as a sensor, but it is effectively just four L=3 devices, requiring at least 14 DEX to build. This system can be confused by variable gravity fields, for example produced by personal Field (De)Focusers, unless the devices producing them are connected to it, or suitable corrections entered, possibly from external sensors; note it will not work in a Momentum Generator field. Passive Sensor. Cost: x4. Price: x4. Uses: 1.028ep/game turn. Weight: 40gp.
Level: 3rd.

Ether Sensor: a sensor which samples the conditions on the ethereal plane, such as the density of etheric matter, the ebb and flow of the ethereal tides, the changing ether winds (particularly whether are in an Ether Cyclone), and radiation and disturbances (such as energy beams, nearby active Transceivers, and trails left by ethereal effects like Dimension Door and Transporters). Effects like a Spy Beam, or most skrying, are too delicate to be picked up, unless are practically on top of them. Long term 'stable' conditions on the physical tend to be mirrored on the etheric, so if the physical has recently changed (removal of a wall, say) the ethereal counterpart can still be detected. Passive Sensor. Range: none. Uses: none. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 3rd.

Life Sensor: see "Biological Devices".
Level: 3rd.

Melder: see "Modification Devices". Active Sensor.
Level: 3rd.

Momentum Generator Detector: combines an ethereal disturbance sensor and gravitic disturbance detector, to sense active use of a Momentum Generator (even to generate artificial gravity). The basic range is 240" (x2/extra L) in air, and 100,000mls (x2/extra L) in space, with large objects such as moons in the way providing sensor shadows. If the pseudo velocity exceeds that of light, then x10 range, and DMs may rule improved range for more than 10% light. Requires 5gpwt of mithral for coils. Passive Sensor. Cost: x2. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 3rd.

Multi Scanner: a matter and energy detection and analysis device which displays its information in symbolic form. A throw of less than intelligence on a D20 will indicate the composition and energy types of objects in a detection area of 1"rad. A Tech is +1 per three levels attained, i.e. 4th-6th +1, 7th-9th +2; and -1/extra 1"rad, 19 maximum no matter the bonuses. Required period of study depends on familiarity and complexity, e.g. water, stone, air- 1round, natural humanoids (humans, orcs, ogres)- 3rounds, complex machinery- 5+rounds. Precise details will not be known. Range: air- 50", water- 10", solid- 5" (x2/extra L); ep usage is based on equivalent air range. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum (which is as the range in air) as an Ultra Comm. There is no minimum range. Active Sensor. Usage: 1ep/50"scan range/round. Weight: 20gp.
Level: 4th.

Sonicvision Lens: two lenses are made which use ultra-sonics to give an echo location ability similar to a bat. Computer Theory I is required. Can't clearly 'see' objects smaller than approx. 6 inches so fine work can not be done using it, frequently a lens is only worn over one eye. Also usable to 'see' ultrasonic sound. Includes an array of ultra-sonic transducers, a Coder, and a specialised Micro Video Monitor (without sound option). Active Sensor. Cost: x3. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 10gp.
Level: 4th.

Sensitive Circuit: a more general form of Identity Circuit. Psionic Theory I is required to understand how this works. This can: sense hostility and be included in a weapon to only allow its knowing use on living creatures in self-defence or may recognise one person or general type (e.g. 'race') or life aura pattern as enemy and prevent use/activate trap. The person/people/pattern recognised is selected during construction and (a sample) must be present. Requires a successful Modify Machine throw to remove it, and in some cases DMs may rule does not increase the weight of devices it is included in. (Micro) Miniturisation should make these more difficult to remove without wrecking the device, say -20% (micro -40%), and there might even be an anti-tamper self-destruct keyed on who it is sensitive to, giving say a further -10%. Requires 1gpwt of mithral. Two, with the same pattern, may be built at +50% cost, three at +100% cost. Passive Sensor. Range: 1'. Uses: none. Weight: 1gp.

Surface Scanner: scans an object to record a static colour image of its surface in considerable detail and with full dimensions, suitable for storing in a Recorder or Storage. Similar to a slow-scan Holo Camera. A range of voice and other annotations are typically added to the scan via the included basic sound transducer, or other devices such as Gesture Scanner (e.g. text), Melder, Energy Probe, Multi Scanner or Life Scanner. The usual use for scans is to compare with a previous scan, often side-by-side on a Video Monitor, to look for similarities or differences, while listening to/looking at the annotations. A scan takes 10 rounds, but can handle a small amount of movement by the thing being scanned, e.g. a person. Generated scans include a security code, which can incorporate time information, which makes it difficult to tamper with them once completed. Also called a Machine Scanner, see Scanning Machines. See "Programming Devices" and see "Information Devices" for further details. Double range or half scan time (down to 2.5rounds) per extra L. Active Sensor. Range: 1" (x2/extra L). Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 4th.

Machine Scanner: see Surface Scanner.
Level: 4th.

Scanning Machines: is using a Machine Scanner to produce a scan or Machine Pattern. When a machine is scanned typically all covers are removed and inspection panels opened to provide more detail, and the (heavily annotated) scan is called a "Machine Pattern". This is used to check for any changes in the machine scanned, or recorded to assist in finding faults in similar machines; note that there is a standard protocol understood by all Techs and Technis for the annotation of a Machine Pattern. Comparing a scan with a previously recorded Machine Pattern gives automatic Understand Machine on identical machines, a bonus on similar machines and possible minuses if there are concealed differences. Even if a Machine Scanner is not available a previous recording can be displayed, for example using a Video Monitor (and sound transducer), and compared by eye with a machine.

Visual Transceiver: see Transceiver.
Level: 4th.

Comm: communicates through the ethereal plane with (Mass) Comms or Transceivers at light-speed. Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to understand how this works. Can communicate as a short-range Transceiver (about 10ml (100" below ground) range) with sound only (incorporates basic sound transducers), at +1L visual images (a Visual Comm), and at +2L holographic images (a Holo Comm). Note that some external device is needed to supply/display the (holo) images. With another Comm rather than a Transceiver the range is increased to x10 by using frequency switching and encoding to get around interference (also see Mass Comm). A Comm Mesh can be detected, but not received from or sent to. Active Sensor. Range: 100(10)mls (1,000(100)" below ground). Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 4th.

Comm Mesh: provides a secure multi-way communication mesh via the ethereal plane, similar to a number of computer-controlled Transceivers, at light-speed. Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to understand how this works. Frequencies are switched, encoding and priorities changed, and messages are routed in different ways around the mesh to handle varying loads, interference, and failing components. The basic mesh has five comm units in the mesh, x2/extra L. Handles sound only (incorporates basic sound transducers), at +1L visual images (a Visual Comm Mesh), and at +2L holographic images (a Holo Comm Mesh). Note that some external device is needed to supply/display the (holo) images. Note that messages cannot be sent to or received from Transceivers or (Mass) Comms, and it is very difficult to 'tap' a mesh; several meshes may be used in an area without interference. Two meshes may be linked by wiring together up to three pairs of units from each mesh to act as 'bridges'. Dense material reduces the range. Active Sensor. Range: 50-100mls (500-1,000" below ground) radius. Uses: 5ep/turn at each unit. Weight: 50gp each unit.
Level: 4th.

Proximity Detector: detects movement of objects within a given mass range within a set radius, may be set to ignore any movement within a set second radius, using a sensor field. The field is blocked by thick metal shielding (shielding within the operating radius may be detected on set-up), otherwise it penetrates anything except specialist force fields and the equivalent of Non-Detection. Includes an alarm light and/or buzzer, at +1L can show direction, distance, speed and approximate mass of object. Basic maximum 10"rad (x2/extra L), ignore radius 0-2"rad (x2/extra L). Adjustable minimum mass is 10gpwt (half/extra L), with no maximum mass. A Field Demodulator of at least equal L used very skilfully could be used to evade detection, as could possibly crawling through at about an inch a minute. Note that normal shielded objects will give a moving 'hole'. For example anything more than 220gpwt more than 1" away (and less than 10") moving sets off the alarm. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/round. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 4th.

Micro Stabaliser: see "Transport Devices".
Level: 4th.

Robot Eye: a crystal globe closely resembling a human or animal eye. The iris automatically changes to accommodate different light levels, or may be controlled externally. Acts as a Video Camera handling normal, dim and infra-red light; at +1L also ultraviolet (and see invisible), at +2L also can see energy flows and fields with different colours indicating different types, if DMs permit this. Two may be constructed at +50% cost and time. Passive Sensor. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 3gp.
Level: 4th.

Humanoid Holo Camera: a Holo Omniphonic Camera which scans only from a viewpoint as if a single humanoid form. The exact humanoid form may vary, but the whole form must be scanned, and it must fit within the radius (a sphere 5'rad, in contact with the scanner, 1"rad and 1"range at +1L, then +1"rad and +1"range per extra L). Otherwise as a Holo Omniphonic Camera of +1L, so +1000gp and two extra week's work is required. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 4th.

Message Laser: is a continuous rather than a pulse laser with a infra-red beam (otherwise as a Hand Laser of -2L). If it is fed by a suitable Coder II+ it can transmit very complex information very rapidly, about 2MC/round, to be read by a Sensor and a corresponding Coder II+. This device only has one mark. Active Sensor. Cost: 5,000gp. Range: 10mls in clear air (+10mls/extra L). Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp. Non Micro Miniturisable.
Level: 4th.

Muscle Scanner: 'reads' the muscular tension (or gestures) of a creature and codes this as information, usually for feeding to a ~ Computer. This is as a Gesture Scanner of -1L except the gestures only need go as far as tensing the appropriate muscles, though full gestures can still be recognised. Passive Sensor. Range: 1" (x2/extra L). Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 100gp.
Level: 4th.

Comms Energy Beam Transmitter: see Information Transmission and see "Power Handling Devices".
Level: 4th.

Low-level Colour Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts low-level and (colour) normal light into electrical signals. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 4th.

Infrared Colour Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts infrared and (colour) normal light into electrical signals. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 4th.

Ultraviolet Colour Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts ultraviolet (invisible) and (colour) normal light into electrical signals. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 4th.

Fine Scent Sensor: see Scent Sensor.
Level: 4th.

Sound Scanner: scans omniphonic sound (from sub to ultra sonic) and converts this into electrical signals. Scanning is done using a delicate and invisible force field, with overload protection, and at +1L the 'viewpoint' may be at 1" range from the scanner, +1"/extra L. This compares to a Sound Sensor as a Holo Camera compares to a Video Camera, and is visual-image grade information for the purpose of being stored or transmitted. The scanning field is blocked by dureum, almost any kind of energy defence force field, and by a Body Shield. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 100gp.
Level: 4th.

Mass Comm: communicates through the ethereal plane with (Mass) Comms or Transceivers at light-speed. Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to understand how this works. Can communicate as a medium-range Transceiver (about 100ml (1,000" below ground) range) with sound only (incorporates basic sound transducers), at +1L visual images (a Visual Mass Comm), and at +2L holographic images (a Holo Mass Comm). Note that some external device is needed to supply/display the (holo) images. With a Comm rather than a Transceiver the above ground range is increased to x10 by using frequency switching and encoding to get around interference, and with a Mass Comm x100. Can be run at a tenth power and only function as a Comm. A Comm Mesh can be detected, but not received from or sent to. Active Sensor. Range: below ground- 1,000"; above ground: trans- 100mls, comm- 1,000mls, mass comm- 10,000mls. Uses: 25ep/turn, comm- 2.5/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 5th.

Ultra Comm: a non-directional Transceiver using the Astral Plane. Multi-Planar Theory II is needed to understand how this works. Sound only (incorporates a basic sound transducer), visual images at +1L, and holo images at +2L. Information is exchanged with a 'velocity' of 5x light and a maximum range in ideal conditions of 5 light years. See Skew Generator and see Warp Generator for increased 'velocity' and range. Recent (Super) Novas in the area would cause interference, and stopped by a Portal Block of +2L. Needs 5gpwt of adamantite for coils. This device was previously called a 'Comm Link'. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 5th.

Scanner: a longer range, but more sensitive, Multi Scanner, the basic scan area is 10"rad. Needs to be mounted on an anchor mass of at least 2.5tns (55,000gpwt), for every double this the basic scan area may be halved, to a minimum of 1'rad. Range: air- 5,000", fog- 1,000", rain/snow/dust storm- 500" (x2/extra L); ep usage is based on equivalent air range. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum (which is as the range in air) as an Ultra Comm. There is a minimum range of a hundredth of the maximum range. If areal or non-material there is no need for an anchor mass, and the scan area is 2"rad. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/500"scan range/round. Weight: 200gp.

Holo Camera: is a hemi-spherical sensor device which uses a field-generated laser to continuously convert 3D visual (holo) images, limited as a Video Camera of -2L. Sometimes called a Colour Holo Camera. At +1L the sensor may be flat and the images from a viewpoint 1" from the Camera, +1"/extra L. For +500gp and an extra week's work may include a Sound Sensor system, to pickup such things as speech and music, a Holo Monophonic Camera. For +1000gp and two extra week's work this can alternatively be a Sound Scanner of -1L, a Holo Omniphonic Camera. Any sound signals may be considered to be 'folded' into the visual holographic information, without increasing its size. The scanning laser is nearly invisible but might be detected as a slight flickering. Other versions at equal or higher L can handle infrared, ultraviolet (invisible), low-level light, or some combination of these. Blocked by dureum, the force field Attack Form Flicker/Light, non-standard specialist force fields, and a minor function of a Reality Shield; not stopped by normal skry/scanning blocks. Range: none. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp (including any sound system).

Ultraviolet (UV) Holo Camera: a Holo Camera that converts ultraviolet (invisible) holo images into electrical signals, but not normal light. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 5th.

Humanoid Image Scanner: an Image & Scent Scanner which scans only from a viewpoint as if a single humanoid form. Reality Theory I is required. The exact humanoid form may vary, but the whole form must be scanned, and it must fit within the radius (a sphere 5'rad, in contact with the scanner, 1"rad and 1"range at +1L, then +1"rad and +1"range per extra L). Otherwise as an Image & Scent Scanner of +1L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 5th.

Targetting Laser: is a continuous rather than a pulse laser with a infra-red beam (otherwise as a Heavy Laser of -2L). Can transmit information as a Message Laser, and includes an IR sensor array which can be used for very accurate measurement of distance and very accurate long range targetting, e.g. of Laser Cannons. This device only has one mark. Active Sensor. Cost: 10,000gp. Range: indefinate. Uses: 15ep/turn. Weight: 1500gp. Non Micro Miniturisable.

Full Spectrum Video Camera: a Video Camera that converts low-level and (colour) infra, through normal, to ultra, light into electrical signals. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 50gp.
Level: 5th.

Radiation Scanner: detects and analyses all forms of radiation, including all forms produced by Radiation Generator (DMs see "UnEthical Devices"), and psionic or magical radiation (if such things exists, e.g. 'mana'). Radiation is raw energy, and structured energy such as energy beams, psionic probes or magical spells will not be detected. Gives the direction and range of the generating device, if appropriate (i.e. there is one), or where there are concentrations of radiation. Will not detect a Reality Generator, Matter Scanner, or similar reality-type effects. Requires 1gpwt of spectrum (rainbow metal). Passive Sensor. Range: none. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 30gp.
Level: 5th.

Ether Probe: functions to probe the Ethereal Plane with similar range to a Transporter and may penetrate where one can (e.g. up to 10" of rock without a 'fix'). Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to build, and to some extent to operate, this. Provides information on the general nature of 'stable' conditions on the associated part of the physical plane, such as open areas, water or air pressure, temperature, light levels, other radiation levels, presence of higher life forms, but not details like moving non-living objects, precise composition of water or air, local temperature variations, locations of shadows, the nature of any life forms etc. In addition any constant Blocks which would effect a Spy Beam (or Transporter) can be detected by 'feeling them out', and the area they cover mapped out, and the 'wake' left by ethereal transport magic, such as Dimension Door, or a Transporter, traced to show origin and destination. A Spy Beam of no more than +1L can be similarly traced. In addition it can detect and analyse disturbances on the ethereal, such as Ether Cyclones. The interpretation of this information is one of the reasons Multi-Planar Theory is required. Blocked as a Spy Beam of +1L. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000mls. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. Active Sensor. Uses: 5ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 5th.

Skew Generator: see "Transport Devices".
Level: 5th.

Structure Scanner: provides details about the structure of mostly homogenous non-living materials, in sub-microscopic detail if required. Uses a combination of sonics, and magnetic, electric and other fields to probe; cannot penetrate the appropriate varieties of force field. The information is presented in a symbolic form, or if a Video & Sound Monitor or Holo Monophonic Display is connected on these in a number of forms, both sound and light. A common use is to inspect metal or crystal, and various forms of joints for flaws, flawed Crystal objects will almost always be spotted, and finding where to do the improvements in Enhanced Frames (see "Modification Devices") can save 25% of the time. This device can give +15% Understand Machine where appropriate, mainly on large "Mechanical Devices". The scan range is only 1", but if parts of a connected object are being scanned then up to 5" away may be inspected. While very detailed scanning is being done it must not move relative to the object; clamping it to it will do. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/round. Weight: 30gp.
Level: 5th.

Jump Generator Detector: operates in space to detect use of a Jump Generator at very long range, both departure and arrival. The Jump Generator is not a precisely defined device, and in consequence a 'Detector must be matched to the variety of 'Generator. In some cases there may be multiple varieties of Jump Generator defined for a particular universe, using different mechanics, and in this case there should be a variety of Jump Generator Detector for each. Very long range might reasonably be half a solar system, say 3.5Tmls (about half a light-day), and what is detected is whether have 'jumped out', or whether someone has 'jumped in'. At closer range, say 3.5Mmls, some further details might be detected, such as the approximate mass jumped. Passive Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 5th.

Data Reader: is more of an information processor, but has a number of sensor capabilities. See "Computer Devices".
Level: 5th.

Magic Scanner: is a relative of the Multi Scanner which detects and analyses magical energies. It is used in the same way as a Multi Scanner, and as one precise details will not be known. Passive magic is far more difficult to detect than active magic, for example it is almost impossible to detect the as yet uncast spells of a magic-user. DMs may rule that it is very difficult to detect passive magic items, such as protection items which are not currently providing protection (but magic armour being worn is providing protection), difficult to detect magic waiting to be triggered, standard to detect magic actively working like detection items or weapons in use in combat, and easy to detect magic with splashy energy effects like fire, cold and lightning. May be 'piggy-backed' onto a (Multi) Scanner or a Macro Scanner, if they are modified with 5gpwt of mithral, 25gpwt, or 250gpwt respectively. Requires 5gpwt of mithral. Active Sensor. Usage: 1ep/50"scan range/round. Weight: 20gp.
Level: 5th.

Spy Beam: functions via the Ethereal Plane in a similar way to a Transporter and may penetrate where one can (e.g. up to 10" of rock without a 'fix'). Multi-Planar Theory I is needed to build, and to some extent to operate, this. 'Transmits' selected light and other radiation (not sound) instantaneously to the receiver, could be used to give a Transporter 'fix'. The observed volume is a hemispherical hologram up to 1"rad using Spy Beam Control program or as a 2D image as if on a Video Monitor (using Minor SBC program). The image viewed is not converted to intermediary electrical signals at any point. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000mls. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. Active Sensor. Uses: hologram- 25ep/turn, image- 5ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 6th.

Mind Probe: see Mind Probe/Programmer in "Biological Devices".
Level: 6th.

Macro Scanner: a very long range, but very sensitive, Multi Scanner, the basic scan area is 100"rad. Needs to be mounted on an anchor mass of at least 25tns (500kgpwt), for every double this the basic scan area may be halved, to a minimum of 1"rad. Range: vacuum- 500,000", clear air- 100,000", cloud/mist- 50,000" (x2/extra L); ep usage is based on equivalent vacuum range. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. There is a minimum range of a hundredth of the maximum range. If areal or non-material there is no need for an anchor mass, and the scan area is 20"rad. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/5,000"scan range/round. Weight: 2,000gp.

Image Scanner: converts 3D visual (holo) images, other radiation (e.g. IR and UV), and omniphonic sound (from sub to ultra sonic) into holographic electrical signals. Reality Theory I is required. Uses an effect similar to a simplified Matter Scanner. At +1L the images may be from a viewpoint 1" from the Scanner, +1"/extra L. For +1000gp and an extra two week's work may include a Fine Scent Sensor, which can sense from the viewpoint of the image, an Image & Scent Scanner. Can only see inside things where there are (larger than microscopic) openings. The scanning effect is totally invisible, and can only be detected by something like a Matter Scanner or Detect Skrying. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 6th.

Image & Scent Scanner: see Image Scanner.
Level: 6th.

Humanoid Touch Scanner: a Touch Scanner which scans only as if a single humanoid form. Reality Theory I is required. The exact humanoid form may vary, but the whole form must be scanned, and it must fit within the radius (a sphere 5'rad, in contact with the scanner, 1"rad and 1"range at +1L, then +1"rad and +1"range per extra L). Otherwise as a Touch Scanner of +1L. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.

Level: 6th.

Ultraviolet Colour Holo Camera: a Holo Camera that converts ultraviolet (invisible) level and (colour) normal light holo images into electrical signals. Cost +1000gp and two week's work for Sound Scanner option. Range: 1". Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 6th.

Planar Probe: functions to probe the inner planes and the Astral Plane with a similar range to a Portal Generator and may reach where one can (i.e. anywhere on the inner planes in a universe, or to weak or nexus points in other universes). Multi-Planar Theory II is needed to build, and Multi-Planar Theory I to operate, this. Cannot reach the physical plane but can provide similar information to a much longer range Ether Probe. Blocks which would effect a Spy Beam (or a Transporter) can be mapped and by-passed, and blocks which would effect a Viewer or Portal Generator can be mapped, as can the distortions left by astral transport magic, such as Teleport, a Teleporter, or a Portal Generator. Any Spy Beam, and a Viewer of no more than +1L, can be traced. In addition it can detect and analyse disturbances on the astral, such as the Psychic Wind. Nexus Search as a Portal Generator can also be carried out. The interpretation of this information is one of the reasons Multi-Planar Theory is required. Blocked as a Viewer of +1L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 1000gp.

Macro Spy Beam: a longer-range Spy Beam which otherwise functions as a Spy Beam of -1L; corresponds to a Spy Beam as a Macro Transporter corresponds to a Transporter. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000,000mls. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. Active Sensor. Uses: hologram- 25ep/turn, image- 5ep/turn. Weight: 10,000gp.
Level: 7th.

Visi Ray Generator: functions via the Ethereal Plane as a two-way Spy Beam in a similar way to a Transporter and may penetrate where one can (e.g. up to 10" of rock without a 'fix'). Multi-Planar Theory II is needed to build, and Multi-Planar Theory I to operate, this. 'Transmits' selected light, other radiation, and sound instantaneously to the receiver, and the same to the point observed. The images at both ends are either a hemispherical hologram up to 1"rad or a 2D image as if on a Video Monitor. Can interlock with another prepared 'Generator at the other end to give double range. No program is required. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000mls. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. Can also function as a Spy Beam of -1L. Active Sensor. Uses: hologram- 25ep/turn, image- 5ep/turn, two-way- x2. Weight: 10,000gp.
Level: 7th.

Portal Generator: see "Transport Devices". Active Sensor.
Level: 7th.

Viewer: functions via the Astral Plane in a similar way to a Portal Generator and may reach where one can (i.e. anywhere on the inner planes in a universe, or to weak or nexus points in other universes). Multi-Planar Theory II is needed to build, and Multi-Planar Theory I to operate, this. 'Transmits' selected light and other radiation (not sound) instantaneously to the receiver via an invisible (two-way) 1 inch diameter 'peephole'; material objects and high-energy radiation (e.g. laser beams) may not pass either way. The observed volume is either a hemispherical hologram up to 1"rad or a 2D image as if on a Video Monitor. The image viewed is not converted to intermediary electrical signals at any point. A Viewer can not do nexus search or reduce the power usage of a Portal Generator focused on it, but it can detect and locate (either end of) the use of Viewers and Portal Generators within 50mls while it is not viewing. If lock onto another Viewer (or its end point) then two-way viewing is possible. Viewer Control program is required. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 7th.

Touch Scanner: converts the size, shape, texture, scent and movement of objects into electrical signals similar to a sense of touch. Uses a delicate force field of 3 STR maximum to scan a specified volume for objects, and also functions as a Fine Scent Sensor. Use for complex tasks via remote manipulation requires a Touch Scanner and Touch Generator at both ends; the feedback could be painful on occasion but 3 STR is unlikely to do any lasting damage (pass any damage on as subdual damage). Note that pure energy like laser bolts or blaster (etc) effects are not picked up by a Scanner, but that it can sense temperature differences. Another use might be to give a whole body sense of touch to a robot with a rigid skin, probably via a (Tacti)Coder, and a (Scent)Coder to provide the sense of smell (and taste). The objects may be from a viewpoint 1" from the Scanner, +1"/extra L. The scanning effect is a totally invisible force field, but might be detected by observing its very fine feedback effects on objects, which can be as delicate as the touch of a single hair. Active Sensor. Uses: 1ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 7th.

Humanoid Dimensional Scanner: a Dimensional Scanner which scans only as if a single humanoid form. Reality Theory I is required. The exact humanoid form may vary, but the whole form must be scanned, and it must fit within the radius (a sphere 1"rad, up to 1" from the scanner, +1"rad and +1"range per extra L). Otherwise as a Dimensional Scanner of +1L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 7th.

Full Spectrum Holo Camera: a Holo Camera that converts low-level and (colour) infra, through normal, to ultra, light holo images into electrical signals. Cost +1000gp and two week's work for Sound Scanner option, a Full Spectrum Holo Omniphonic Camera. Range: 2". Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 500gp.
Level: 7th.

Full Spectrum Holo Omniphonic Camera: see Full Spectrum Holo Camera.
Level: 7th.

Automatic Spy Beam: is a form of Spy Beam which does not need special skill to operate, and otherwise functions in all ways as a Spy Beam of -2L. Computer Theory II in addition is required. Includes automatic controls. Does not require (Minor) Spy Beam Control program. There are similar versions of Macro Spy Beam, (Macro) Visi Ray Generator, and the various Viewers which function automatically, with no need for programs, at +2L on standard. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000mls. Active Sensor. Uses: hologram- 25ep/turn, image- 5ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 8th.

Two Way Viewer: functions via the Astral Plane as a two-way Viewer in a similar way to a Portal Generator and may reach where one can (i.e. anywhere on the inner planes in a universe, or to weak or nexus points in other universes). Multi-Planar Theory III is needed to build, and Multi-Planar Theory I to operate, this. 'Transmits' selected light, other radiation, and sound instantaneously to the receiver, and the same to the point observed; material objects and high-energy radiation (e.g. laser beams) may not pass either way. The images at both ends are either a hemispherical hologram up to 1"rad or a 2D image as if on a Video Monitor. No program is required. Can also function as a Viewer of -1L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 10,000gp.
Level: 8th.

Macro Visi Ray Generator: a longer-range Visi Ray Generator which otherwise functions as a Visi Ray Generator of -1L; corresponds to a Visi Ray Generator as a Macro Transporter corresponds to a Transporter. There can be a magnification function at one or both ends of up to x10 or a 1/10 (x10/extra L), e.g. a 6' figure at one end could appear as an up to 60', or down to 7inch, figure at the far end. Can interlock with another prepared (Macro) Visi Ray Generator at the other end to give double range. Range: inter-planetary, 50,000,000,000mls. Skew and Warp Generators increase range in vacuum as an Ultra Comm. Can also function as a Macro Spy Beam of -1L. Active Sensor. Uses: hologram- 25ep/turn, image- 5ep/turn, two-way- x2. Weight: 100,000gp.
Level: 8th.

Non Material Interface: see "Creation Devices". Active Sensor.
Level: 8th.

Dimensional Scanner: acts as a combined Image Scanner and Touch Scanner of -1L, to record an object in multiple sensory dimensions as holographic electrical signals. Reality Theory I is required. Uses an effect similar to a simplified Matter Scanner, and the Touch Scanner force field. Full continuous analysis of the highly complex information from this would probably require multiple Coders, e.g. a Colour Holocoder which handles the holographic image data, and splits out the other data which it feeds to a Tacticoder and a Scentcoder. Full sensory remote working with full feedback would require a Dimensional Scanner and Display at both ends, see Touch Scanner and see Touch Generator; given continuous analysis one trick would be to make clothes move in the breeze, and shadows look exactly right. The object scanned may be from a viewpoint 1" from the Scanner, +1"/extra L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/turn. Weight: 1000gp.
Level: 8th.

Holo Viewer: a Two Way Viewer where the image at both ends is a hologram up to 1"rad about the receive/transmit point, the latter of which may be up to 1" from the Holo Viewer (+1"rad and +1" range/extra L). There can be a magnification function at one or both ends of up to x10 or a 1/10 (x10/extra L), e.g. a 6' figure at one end could appear as an up to 60', or down to 7inch, figure at the far end. Can also function as a Two Way Viewer of -1L, or a Viewer of -2L. Active Sensor. Uses: 10ep/round. Weight: 10,000gp.
Level: 9th.

Dimensional Interface: a combined Dimensional Scanner and Dimensional Display. See "Environmental Devices".
Level: 9th.
